The Government of Canada is investing more than $20 million in a modern and reliable wastewater treatment plant in Wellington.
“On behalf of Council and the residents of Prince Edward County, I want to extend my sincere thanks to the Government of Canada for this significant investment,” Mayor Steve Ferguson says. “This funding announcement is timely as Council prepares for a conversation about long-range plans to renew water and wastewater infrastructure in such a way that reduces the financial impact on ratepayers.
“This new facility will do much more than increase capacity. It will use modern treatment technology to significantly improve the quality of treated wastewater released back into the environment,” Mayor Ferguson adds. “That means better protection of the natural environment that is so vital to the character and economy of our community.”
The federal government is supporting the Wellington wastewater treatment plant through the Build Communities Strong Fund. That fund is investing $51 billion across Canada in a wide range of infrastructure projects across the country that support economic prosperity, housing, sport, education, health, transit, and climate adaptation.

Today’s investment in wastewater treatment infrastructure will help ensure Prince Edward County meets the community’s future needs as it develops and grows,” says Chris Malette, Member of Parliament for Bay of Quinte.
“Building a strong Canada starts with building strong communities,” says the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada. “The Government of Canada is building infrastructure at a speed and scale not seen in generations – the type of infrastructure projects that support stronger, safer, more connected communities across the country.”
The existing plant was constructed in 1975 and is near capacity. A Master Servicing Plan (MSP) for Wellington was completed in 2021. The MSP identified a new plant as the preferred alternative for wastewater treatment in Wellington.
The project involves the construction of an Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) wastewater treatment plant. An equalization tank for the existing wastewater plant that was built in 2023 will be repurposed as the main tank in the new wastewater treatment plant.
The design work for this project is currently underway.
