Flashback February celebrates The County’s heritage at home

February 11, 2021

Virtual talks, games, and tours planned February 15-20

Prince Edward County, ON – The County Museums will celebrate Heritage Week with the fourth annual Flashback February, February 15-20, 2021. The 2021 “Living Room Edition” of Flashback February features a full program of heritage and history-infused activities including talks, games and tours, delivered online or at home.

“We’ve moved everything online so our community can still enjoy quality heritage-focused experiences from the comfort and safety of home,” says Jessica Chase, Assistant Curator with The County Museums.

Flashback February kicks off on Family Day (Monday, February 15) with an online mystery “A Timeless Gathering at Macaulay House.” Participants will interact with costumed characters through their screens to identify clues and unravel riddles in an effort to solve a mystery. There are four presentations: 11 am and 1 pm are family-friendly, while 3 pm and 7 pm are for ages 16+.

Among the events hosted by The County Museums is a live-streamed edition of the popular Graveyard and Gallows tour in partnership with the Prince Edward Historical Society (February 19). An experienced guide will take participants on a virtual winter walk through the graveyard at the former St. Mary Magdalene Church. The tour then moves to the Picton Courthouse to view the exercise yards, jail cells and gallows while hearing the story of Peter Lazier’s murder and the infamous double hanging of the accused.

The Flashback February schedule also includes:

  • The Arrow’s Secret – A limited edition play-at-home escape game from Escape Camp Picton, available for home delivery.
  • Six unique Facebook Live events from the Seventh Town Historical Society, including a tour of impressive County homes, a history of the local Women’s Institute, and a primer on how to do effective detective work when researching the history of your County property.
  • A conversation with Melissa Mikel from the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies about post-Second World War Canadian connections to the Holocaust.
  • Author and esteemed gardener Lorraine Johnson will present on the value of including native plants in one’s garden.
  • The Prince Edward Heritage Advisory Committee presents Kendra Fry of the National Trust, who will discuss how we can (and must) re-imagine heritage spaces to ensure their survival.
  • The South Shore Joint Initiative presents a walk with local architect Edwin Rowse regarding the philosophies and principles related to the restoration of heritage properties.
  • Local naturalist Terry Sprague will speak on Prince Edward County’s natural wonders, presented by The Friends of Wellers Bay.

The Flashback Pass is a great option for those interested in exploring multiple events. For $40, passholders have access to four signature events: A Timeless Gathering at Macaulay House, In Conversation with Melissa Mikel, Lorraine Johnson: Native Plants for Your Garden, and the Livestreamed Graveyard and Gallows Tour.
