Volunteer Job Descriptions

 

 

 

Some museum volunteers are keen to help however they might be needed on any given day. Other museum volunteers prefer a well-defined responsibility or task to work on.

For those who prefer a defined job description and regular time commitment, the following volunteer positions are currently available at the County Museums.

Public Relations Assistant

Assists with the marketing and promotion of the museum system. Duties include:

  • Helping to promote special events using all types of communication with the public (media releases, mailing lists, social media)
  • Distributing museum brochures/posters
  • Creating displays for, and supervising, museum booths at community festivals and events

Time commitment: 8-12 hours per month

Exhibition Assistant

Assists with the planning, designing and installation of exhibits. Duties include the following, in cooperation with the Curator:

  • Researching content for exhibit themes
  • Drafting design layouts
  • Selecting and locating appropriate artifacts
  • Installing interpretive panels, arrange artifacts and exhibit support material
  • Monitoring state of artifacts and support materials while on display

Time commitment: 12-15 hours per month

Tour Guide

Responsible for giving tours for museum visitors. Duties include:

  • Touring visitors through the Museum / Museum Site
  • Providing guided walking tours affiliated with the Museum
  • May require use of period costumes
  • Adopting a “persona” and interpreting a particular activity, room or building at the museum site.

Time commitment: 7-10 hours per week

School Program Assistant*

Assist the Curator with the presentation of curriculum-based programs for visiting school groups. Duties include:

  • Assisting with program presentation at the museum or part of outreach activities in the schools
  • Helping distribute program information and evaluation to area schools
  • Assisting with the material preparation in advance of the program
  • Assisting with the development of new or revised school programs

* A Vulnerable Sector Police Check is required for this volunteer position.

Time commitment: 6-8 hours per month

Museum Greeter

Responsible for “front-desk” duties at the museum. Duties include:

  • Welcoming Guests
  • Giving an overview of the Museum / Museum Site
  • Giving tourist information
  • Handling small amounts of money for admissions / gift shop purchases
  • Recording visitor numbers
  • Answering phones

Time commitment: 7 hours per week

Event Assistant

Responsible for assisting with event planning and execution. Duties include assisting the Curator with:

  • Brainstorming and planning museum events
  • Acquiring necessary supplies and volunteer assistance
  • Maintaining event checklists and monitoring progress
  • Event set up / take down
  • Event evaluation

Time commitment: 10-20 hours per month

Records Assistant

Responsible for the maintenance of, and updates to, the museum’s administrative files, reference library, and collections databases. Duties include assisting the curator with:

  • Labelling administrative files – prepare for storage or retention
  • Data entry (i.e. collections databases)
  • Updating reference materials and search aids
  • Looking up information for public requests or museum projects
  • Working with archival documents or photographs
  • Cataloguing the collections

Time commitment: 7 hours per week

Grounds and Gardens Assistant

Responsible for the care and upkeep of the grounds and gardens around the museum site. Duties include:

  • Ensuring cleanliness of the grounds
  • Planting gardens
  • Weeding and watering
  • Harvesting gardens and putting them to bed for winter

Time commitment: 7 hours per week (spring through fall)

Gift Shop Assistant

Help organize and operate the museum gift shop. Duties include, in coordination with the Curator:

  • Selection and ordering of inventory
  • Display and pricing of inventory
  • Tracking inventory
  • Brainstorm unique museum-specific products and investigate ways to have items produced

Time commitment: 7 hours per week

Catering Assistant*

Helps to plan, prepare and present food-related events, or catering jobs, at the museums. Duties include:

  • Planning menus and preparing shopping lists
  • Shopping for menus
  • Store and prepare food items in the site’s inspected kitchen
  • Serve and clear tables
  • Clean up

* This position requires a current Food Handler’s Certificate.

12-15 hours per month
